Lately, the 4th graders recited an oath that would take them into the biggest project of their lives: The Classroom Olympics! To participate, you must set your  own goals for each subject, and then  complete them on time. Spirit was high and the 4th graders were eager to start!

Once the goals are completed, their teacher, Sr. Jeanne Marie, would grade the papers. Based on that, a bronze, silver, or a gold medal will be assigned. Sr. Jeanne says: “I think this will be a challenging, academic project for the students. First by getting acquainted with the sports and the Olympians, second to [follow] the curriculum.”

Shauna Harney, a student says: “Another thing we are doing is winter Olympic Sports. We are learning about every sport there is in the Olympics, like bobsled, figure skating, luge, ice hockey, speed skating, skiing, biathlon, skeleton, and curling. We are also doing all of the subjects in one project, math, reading, science, social studies, spelling, religion, and language arts. Sister Jeanne, our teacher has thought this all over and organized everything.”

On a different occasion, the 4th Graders made their “Vases of Love”. They were made of beans, macaroni, corn, seeds, and carrots.

Some other time there was macaroni skeletons where they memorized a short story about the skeleton and all the bones in your body. They also got to name their skeleton.

That’s not all. The 4th Graders made beautiful Jesse Trees showing the year’s until Jesus’ birth. The Jesse Trees are filled with beautiful colors, will be turned into a quilt, and bid on at the April 9th auction. The 4th graders and Sr. Jeanne worked very hard on them and in the end they were surprised with how well they turned out.

The 4th Graders also made four big posters. One was about their favorite state. One was a book report where they could pick any book they wanted. Another was about America where they had to tell ten reasons why they love America and how they would keep America great when they got older. The last one was about money where they could balance a check book and write checks to their parents and teachers.

But wait, there’s still more! The 4th Graders also have biographies to complete. There’s a twist though, the students must dress as their person and give an oral report at the open house. This may seem like a lot of work but the 4th Graders are determined to do their best and go for the gold!
